Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed for two more seasons, and it’s already obvious who season 2’s fan-favorite character will be. The Last Airbender season 1 reintroduced the world of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series, including many of the important players — most notably, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Prince Zuko. Netflix’s adaptation even brought in characters from later seasons, like Princess Azula, expanding their stories from the source material.

While the live-action Last Airbender established most members of Team Avatar, it didn’t show off the whole gang in season 1. With Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender renewed for seasons 2 and 3, viewers can expect the remainder of the players from the animated series to appear sooner or later. And they can surmise who will be the most popular character when season 2 drops on Netflix based on the responses to the original show.

is now streaming on Netflix.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Will Introduce Toph

Toph Blind Bandit Avatar

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender introduces Aang, Katara, and Sokka in season 1, but the series won’t bring in Toph Beifong until its second outing. Although the first season incorporated minor characters and storylines from Book 2 and Book 3 of the animated series, Netflix appears to be sticking to the script when it comes to major plot beats. And Toph doesn’t appear until Book 2, meaning she’ll likely show up in The Last Airbender season 2.

Toph’s first appearance in the animated Last Airbender takes place during season 2, episode 6, “The Blind Bandit.” Aang and his friends come upon her fighting in an underground Earthbending tournament, where Toph proves she’s capable of taking on opponents twice her size despite being blind. Toph eventually becomes Aang’s Earthbending teacher and a member of Team Avatar, and she’ll undoubtedly be the fan-favorite character of the live-action Last Airbender season 2.

Why Toph Is A Fan-Favorite Avatar: The Last Airbender Character

Toph is a fan-favorite character in the animated Last Airbender, so there’s little question that she’ll be equally as popular in the Netflix adaptation. There are many things to love about Toph, from her strength and resilience to her stubborn, rebellious nature. She proves a loyal friend to Aang and the rest of Team Avatar on numerous occasions, and her journey to allowing herself to be vulnerable is incredibly relatable. It’s a joy to watch her come around to the rest of the gang, especially Katara, whose mothering she initially doesn’t jibe with.

Toph also has a fantastic sense of humor, which meshes well with the tone of the original Nickelodeon series. From her constant blind jokes, which might be offensive in any other scenario, to her snarky nicknames and responses, Toph is an all-around entertaining character. She often lightens the mood when she’s on-screen – and when Toph does get serious, that usually means the action and drama is about to hit a high. Her Earthbending skills also make for great fight sequences, another thing to look forward to in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2.

What Netflix’s ATLA Needs To Get Right About Toph

With Toph possessing so many great qualities, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will need to take care when it comes to casting and writing her character. If it intends to stay true to the source material, the show will undoubtedly include Toph’s blindness – and it would be great if the series could find a blind actor to take on the role. This sort of representation is important both on-screen and behind the scenes, and it’s crucial to nail down one of The Last Airbender’s best characters.

In addition to handling Toph’s disability well, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will need to capture her most important personality traits. The series shouldn’t tone down Toph’s headstrong personality, nor should it alter her sense of humor. While the Netflix show made changes to the tone in order to accommodate the jump from animation to live-action, Toph’s humor and defiance is an important part of who she is and how she responds to adversity. If she’s not baiting Katara or calling Aang “twinkle toes,” she simply won’t be the same character. That would hurt Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, which would greatly benefit from a new fan-favorite player.
