Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard confirms that season 5 will address a common complaint regarding season 4. The Duffer Brothers’ hit Netflix show returned in 2022 for season 4 with a story that followed Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike, and the rest of the gang as they faced off against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the forces of the Upside Down from various points around the country. Following the surprising Stranger Things season 4 ending, which saw the cast reunited again, the show has been confirmed to return for one final season.

As the wait for Stranger Things season 5 continues, Wolfhard reveals in an interview with THR that the upcoming batch of episodes will feature the main cast together most of the time, a key change from season 4. The actor also teases more of what’s to come from Mike, with the character poised for some “leader” moments. Check out Wolfhard’s full comment below:

“This last season is sort of a crossroads, and so we’re getting back into a lot of the dynamics of season 1, which is really fun. There’s some ‘leader Mike’ moments, and it’s a very grand season, obviously. Every season has gotten bigger and bigger and bigger, and this season is huge, but it’s also kind of isolated as well. So it’s really fun, and I’m very excited for people to see it…

“We really didn’t shoot very much for the first few months of production [on season 4], because they were so focused on all the Hawkins stuff. So I was really jealous. I was like, ‘Aw, man.’ Even when I finally watched the show, my favorite part was watching the other guys in Hawkins. I just liked that storyline so much.

“So, yeah, not being around everyone all the time was definitely a bummer about filming 4, but 5 is the opposite. We’re all together all the time, and a bunch of us live around the corner and across the street from each other in real life. So the cast is really seeing each other a lot, and we’re in a lot of the same scenes, which has been really great.”

Stranger Things Season 5’s New Update Is Good News

Season 4’s Complaints Explained

Throughout its four-season run, Stranger Things has been well-reviewed, with critics and audiences alike mostly loving the Duffer Brothers’ unique blend of horror, action, and fantasy. Season 4 was the biggest season of the show to date, but it did show signs of struggling to balance its large cast. Not only did it feature a storyline following David Harbour’s Hopper in a Soviet prison, but the characters still in the U.S. were also split up into different groups.

The dynamic between members of the Stranger Things cast has been crucial to the show’s success. Season 1, especially, really honed in on this, with the main storyline involving Eleven, Mike, Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Will (Noah Schnapp) intersecting with others involving Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Hopper, and Joyce (Winona Ryder). While having multiple storylines is nothing new for the show, season 4 pushed this to a whole new level and there was also often a great deal of geographic separation between the characters.

Stranger Things
season 5 is currently in production and is not expected to release on Netflix until 2025.

Stranger Things season 5 is shaping up to be the biggest and most action-packed yet, but Wolfhard’s tease that the show is returning to its season 1 roots is a good sign. Hopefully, this means a deep dive into the character relationships that audiences initially fell in love with, coupled with intense moments of horror and action. It remains to be seen how Stranger Things season 5 will handle a story with so many characters back together in Hawkins again, but it’s certainly shaping up to be a strong sendoff for the series.
