Summary

  • Netflix’s The Gentlemen showcases a standalone storyline set in the same universe as the original film, focusing on Eddie’s inheritance of a drug empire.
  • The show pays homage to the original movie with nods like the mention of “White Widow Super Cheese” weed, recreating key character beats.
  • Kaya Scodelario’s Susie Glass stands out as a better-written female lead than Michelle Dockery’s Rosalind, with her own agency and motivations.

While it would be unfair to draw comparisons between Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen movie and the show, the show significantly improves one character beat from the film. Set in the same universe as the original 2019 movie, Netflix’s The Gentlemen presents a standalone storyline that revolves around Eddie Horniman, who suddenly becomes the Duke of Halstead and the owner of a 15,000-acre state after his father’s demise. A closer look at his newly owned property makes him realize that it accommodates a drug-selling business owned by a kingpin named Bobby Glass.

While unfolding its self-contained narrative, Netflix’s The Gentlemen drops several subtle nods to the original film. For instance, both the show and the movie mention the same grade of weed their main characters sell: “White Widow Super Cheese.” Apart from featuring callbacks to 2019’s The Gentlemen, the Netflix series also recreates one of its main character beats while making it even better.

Kaya Scodelario’s Susie Glass Is Similar To Michelle Dockery’s Rosalind From The OG Gentlemen

Rosalind looking serious in The Gentlemen

Michelle Dockery, of the Downtown Abbey fame, plays Rosalind in the original The Gentlemen film, who is kingpin Mickey Pearson’s wife. Like Mickey, she is tough and runs her own independent business endeavors with ruthless efficiency. She is also steadfast in the interests she and her husband hold dear, and, despite being one of the few female players in the dangerous waters of The Gentlemen‘s criminal world, she commands both fear and respect in equal measure. Kaya Scodelario’s Susie Glass is not too different in Netflix’s The Gentlemen.

After her father ends up in prison, she takes the responsibility of running his weed-selling business while taking care of her younger brother and helping him progress in his boxing career. Even when men like Henry Collins try to break her, she sticks to her decisions and protects her father’s business at all costs. When necessary, she even goes down a warpath against those who threaten her family and try to disrupt the flow of her father’s business. However, despite sharing these similarities with Michelle Dockery’s Rosalind, Kaya Scodelario’s Susie Glass seems better written in more ways than one.

Despite being set in the same universe as the original Guy Ritchie film, Netflix’s The Gentlemen features an entirely new roster of cast & characters.

Netflix’s The Gentlemen’s Female Lead Is Better Written Than The OG’s

Unlike Rosalind, who is portrayed as Mickey’s partner-in-crime in the original film, Susie Glass has her own agency and motivations. Rosalind is also depicted more as a side character in the original movie instead of being as significant of a lead as her husband. Susie, in contrast, is one of the two co-leads and has many of her own sub-plots and side-quests throughout the series. Netflix’s The Gentlemen also does not force any romantic developments between Kaya Scodelario’s Susie and Theo James’ Eddie, allowing Susie to maintain her autonomy without being solely defined by her relationship with the male protagonist.
