Summary

  • The Bad Batch season 3 reunites Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor in a dynamic clone “pre-reunion” before Star Rebels.
  • Wolffe is still loyal to the Empire in The Bad Batch season 3, struggling to see the truth (though he does let the rogue clones and Omega go).
  • Rex’s efforts to help his brothers and fight the Empire will likely end poorly, leading to the presumed loss of the clones he’s been trying to save until only Gregor and Wolffe are by his side as seen in the future with Rebels.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 brings together a key trio of clones with connections to Star Wars Rebels. Although Rebels is set years after the events of The Bad Batch, it’s sort of a pre-reunion, teasing a known future in the Star Wars timeline. As such, it does seem as though one of Clone Commander Rex’s darkest stories is about to be told.

As seen in The Bad Batch season 3, episodes 6-7, Clone Force 99 rendezvouses with Rex and his fellow clone troopers who’ve defected from the tyranny of the new Empire during the Dark Times. However, they’re soon attacked by one of the Empire’s new Imperial Shadow agents who also calls in some backup from a contingent of clones who are still loyal to the Empire. As such, this leads to a dynamic clone “reunion” for Captain Rex, one that foreshadows a dark future along with his status quo seen in Star Wars Rebels years later.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 3, Episode 7 Ended With A Rebels “Reunion”

Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor

The Imperial Shadow agents are creations of Doctor Hemlock, having been captured clones whose identities were stripped away during their intense reconditioning to become living weapons to be activated at the Empire’s will. However, the legion of clones that were called in to help the Shadow agent apprehend Omega still have their identities and free will. This includes Clone Commander Wolffe who’s revealed to be loyal to the Empire and in charge of the retrieval team.

Naturally, Wolffe is surprised to learn that the insurgents his forces were called in to handle are none other than fellow clones led by Commander Rex, his brother whom he believed died during the events of Order 66. Appealing to Wolffe, Rex begs his brother to open his eyes and see the truth of the Empire’s darkness and what it’s doing to their fellow brothers, all while Echo and Gregor arrive to provide a well-timed extraction. While Wolfee doesn’t fully defect right then and there, he does allow the rogue clones to leave with Omega.

It’s a good sign that Rex’s darkest story will soon be told in the episodes of
The Bad Batch
season 3 still to come.

This isn’t the last The Bad Batch season 3 has seen of Wolffe, and future episodes may see him leaving the Empire for good. However, the true significance of this two-episode arc is that it put Rex, Wolffe, and even Gregor together, the trio of surviving clones featured in Star Wars Rebels years later, closer to the start of the original trilogy of Star Wars films. While they’re not yet a true trio of survivors, it’s a good sign that Rex’s darkest story will soon be told in the episodes of The Bad Batch season 3 still to come.

Several Clones Will Be Lost

Rex, Wolffe, and Grego in Star Wars Rebels

While Rex may be helping rogue clones and mustering his brothers to fight the Empire in The Bad Batch, it can’t last much longer. After all, Star Wars fans have already seen where Rex ends up thanks to Star Wars Rebels, hiding out on a remote world alongside Gregor and Wolffe (and no one else). As such, Rex’s efforts will likely end very poorly by the end of The Bad Batch, and the presumed loss of all the clones he’s trying to save will likely motivate him to give up the fight for multiple years during the Dark Times.

Thankfully, Rex is eventually convinced by the Spectres and Ahsoka Tano to join the Rebel Alliance as seen in Star Wars Rebels season 2. Even Gregor and Wolffe join the fight to liberate Lothal in the series finale. However, this “pre-reunion” for Rex, Gregor, and Wolffe in The Bad Batch season 3 more than likely teases that things are about to get much darker before they get better in the Star Wars timeline.
