Deadpool 3 Can Make A Controversial 18-Month-Old MCU Joke Even Wilder

Given the irreverent tone of the Deadpool movies, it’s no surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine plans to take shots at the MCU, and this gives the movie the perfect chance to call back to a recent joke Marvel made about itself. While Marvel movies usually have a lot of jokes in them, they don’t typically get too self-referential. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s trailer already showed that this isn’t the case for the upcoming movie. Even in its short runtime, Deadpool managed to mention Marvel’s parent company, Disney, and even referred to himself as “Marvel Jesus.“

Though most Marvel projects tend to keep the fourth wall intact, Deadpool & Wolverine won’t actually be the first MCU release to break it. Previously, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law also played around with fourth wall breaks and meta jokes, similar to the previous Deadpool movies. She-Hulk even took her meta humor even further than Deadpool ever had at one point when she broke out of her show to go confront Marvel Studios. She-Hulk‘s fourth wall breaking jokes also provide an interesting set-up that Deadpool & Wolverine could bring back.

When speaking with Collider, returning Deadpool star, Karan Soni, mentioned that the movie will be making jokes about Kevin Feige. Feige has served as the architect for the MCU timeline, making creative decisions about the path of Marvel’s shared universe. No doubt, Deadpool & Wolverine will likely be taking some good-natured shots at Feige for some of Marvel’s creative decisions that didn’t end up panning out. These types of jokes were a staple of the previous Deadpool movies.

While Deadpool was still over in Fox’s X-Men universe, he would consistently crack jokes at the expense of the Fox franchise. This included several references to Deadpool’s botched first appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and comments on the confusion between Fox’s multiple X-Men timelines. Now that Deadpool is entering the MCU, it’s expected that he will be making similar types of jokes about Kevin Feige and the MCU at large.

Though Deadpool will likely be the first Marvel character to comment on many aspects of the MCU, he won’t be the first to criticize Kevin Feige. She-Hulk already beat Deadpool to the punch when it comes to jokes about Feige – going so far as to meet him, in a sense. In the season finale, dissatisfied with the ending of her show, She-Hulk breaks out of Disney+ and goes to confront Marvel about it. When she does, she meets KEVIN, the robot in charge of organizing the MCU.

KEVIN is a clear parallel to Kevin Feige, and was even visually designed to look like he is wearing a hat similar to the one Feige often wears. Though the show only ever refers to him as KEVIN, it is clear to anyone with background knowledge of the MCU who the robot is meant to be. The use of KEVIN as opposed to actually including Kevin Feige raises a question about how Deadpool & Wolverine will be handling its jokes aimed at the Marvel boss.

When given the chance to make fun of Feige in the past, Marvel opted to go a more indirect route with the KEVIN bot. However, indirect isn’t exactly Deadpool’s style. For instance, in Deadpool 2 the Marvel anti-hero shot Ryan Reynolds in the head to prevent him making Green Lantern, which was far from a subtle jab at the DC movie. It seems a lot more likely that Deadpool & Wolverine‘s jokes at Feige’s expense will be in the form of fourth-wall breaking lines, versus something like an actual appearance by KEVIN.

That being said, there is a place where KEVIN could still appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. From the trailer and set leaks, it has been revealed that the titular pair will be duking it out in front of a 20th Century Fox sign in what many speculate to be the Void from Loki. If this is the case, it is possible there could be a quick cameo from a busted KEVIN bot somewhere in the Void as a subtle jab at Feige. However, it seems unlikely that Deadpool & Wolverine would include a full KEVIN appearance, as it would risk being too similar to the one from She-Hulk.
