The first official image for Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios has been revealed. James Gunn and Peter Safran are charting the next ten years of releases in their DC Universe; however, that does not mean that all DC projects will be canon to the DCU. There are some announced Elseworlds DC movies and series in the works, and one of the most interesting has just had its first official image released.

On Twitter, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios Concept Environment Artist @Kuzeh shared a look at the first official image for the upcoming animated movie.

The image from DC’s Batman movie sees its version of the Dark Knight with glowing yellow eyes. While Gunn’s DCU will see its actors play their characters in animation, video games, and live-action, it is for the best that standalone DC projects like Batman Azteca continue to be made, bringing unique takes on popular characters.

Batman has a great future at DC in both animation and live-action, with the character set to appear or lead multiple upcoming movies. The most popular fancast to play Batman in the DCU is Jensen Ackles, and while the Supernatural actor has not yet been cast as Bruce Wayne in live-action, the actor will voice the hero in two 2024 movies. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Parts 2 & 3 will serve to conclude the animated Tomorrowverse, and as Ackles voices Bruce in the universe, he will return for the two multiverse films.

The two Crisis on Infinite Earths animated movies will be joined by Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios as the next adventures for the character in the animated realm. However, as already revealed, Batman Azteca will be an Elseworlds story that brings the concept of the Dark Knight and his villains to a very different setting and culture. A more traditional Batman Elseworlds film is also in DC’s plans, with director Matt Reeves teaming up again with star Robert Pattinson for The Batman – Part II.

Reeves still has to reveal any details about what The Batman – Part II‘s story or which characters will return, though Colin Farrell’s The Penguin series is confirmed to bridge the gap between the first movie and its sequel. Finally, James Gunn’s DCU will reboot Batman with the announced The Brave and the Bold. The movie will be directed by The Flash‘s Andy Muschietti, with the Batman reboot focusing on Bruce Wayne meeting his son Damian and bonding with him. Despite Batman’s DCU role, Gunn has shown that more Elseworlds projects like Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios could happen.
