Power Rangers’ Original Blue Ranger Unleashes the Franchise’s Greatest Weapon of All Time

Warning: Spoilers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #2!The original Blue Ranger and tech guru of the Power Rangers has created the ultimate weapon to eradicate evil. Fans will recall that the Zordon Era of the show ends when the titular space wizard sacrifices himself to create the famous Z-Wave that wipes evil energy from the galaxy completely. Its impact lasts several years, most recently being a pivotal plot point for the finale of Cosmic Fury.

Billy Cranston is able to produce his own Z-Wave by means of a detonating device called The Benevolator in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #2. This series occurs in an alternate reality where the original Power Rangers don’t separate until evil is permanently vanquished. The team reaches their breaking point when Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa destroy the Command Center, and in turn, Alpha and Zordon.

Zordon’s sudden death means he never gets to produce his famous Z-Wave. However, a flashback reveals that Billy creates an alternate that, in turn, proves to be the most powerful weapon any of the Power Rangers have created.

The flashback depicts how the Power Rangers defeat Rita Repulsa and her villainous cronies using The Benevolator. As Billy explains to his fellow Power Rangers during the issue, The Benevolator borrows energy from the Morphin Grid that is capable of purifying all nearby evil energy in one big blast. He doesn’t specify how the device manages to connect to the Morphin Grid, but if anyone can figure out how to pull off such a feat, it’s the team’s technology expert.

To create the Ranger’s weaponry, Billy frequently finds himself tapping into the Morphin Grid, even in the BOOM! comics universe. He continues to do so as an adult in the modern world, where he experiments with the Morphin Grid connection to further his previous teleportation tech to advance it in a genius way. It’s believable to think that he’s found a way to connect to the Morphin Grid despite Zordon’s absence. His calculations are proven correct when the mission proves a success.

Billy Makes Another Strong Case for Being the Best in Power Rangers History

Tommy Oliver is often praised as being the best Power Ranger of the ’90s, rightfully so, as the longest-tenured member of the cast. However, Billy – the second longest-tenured – may be on his way to replacing the Green Ranger for that accolade. There are several reasons out there to support the theory that Billy could be the Ultimate Power Ranger, but using the Morphin Grid to create this world’s equivalent to the Z-Wave would have to be at the top of the list.

In fact, being able to commit such a feat puts him on more than just Tommy Oliver’s level, but puts him on par with Zordon. As the behind-the-scenes coach of the Power Rangers, Zordon has always been cited as a hero that fans deserve, not just for his wisdom, but for the pure power he holds, the same power that created the Z-Wave. Billy is able to use his brain power to tap into the Morphin Grid and do what Zordon couldn’t in this world. By successfully eradicating evil, Billy may very well be the best of the Power Rangers.
