The chaotic fighting fun of MultiVersus is returning, and this time, it is ready to be released as a full game rather than an open beta. Featuring characters taken from various franchises across Warner Bros. properties, the crossover fighting game offers several different battle modes that take place on a variety of stages and backdrops. Although the game has had a complicated year, it is on its way back, with an official launch day scheduled.

MultiVersus is a platform fighting game similar in some ways to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. but featuring an assortment of characters from the WB. Players can choose to play in 1v1 matches, 4-player free-for-all, or team up for 2v2 battles. If someone does not want to play competitively, there is a new PvE mode that can be enjoyed in single-player or co-op.

MultiVersus Full Release Date

After Shutting Down Servers In June 2023, It Is Launching In Full

MultiVersus was in open beta for over a year before developers shut down the servers for the game in June 2023 to work on preparing it for its full launch. After almost a full year of completely overhauling it based on the feedback received in beta, MultiVersus will be released on May 28, 2024, as a free-to-play game on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game features full cross-play and cross-progression support, so players can enjoy battling with their friends on any platform.

As was seen during the open beta, it is a live-service game with optional paid Seasonal content and microtransactions. Although there are optional microtransactions and seasonal Battle Passes, all characters can be earned through gameplay, and no money has to be spent to enjoy this free-to-play game. Battle Passes provide challenges to let players earn in-game rewards and have both a free option and a premium option.

A Brief Explanation Of What Happened To MultiVersus And New Gameplay Details

Marvin the Martian, a new character from MultiVersus Season 2.

After developers shut down the servers for MultiVersus open beta, the biggest thing they did was change to using Unreal Engine 5 and a new netcode, which improves the visuals of the game as well as the performance. In doing so, they rebuilt the game from the ground up and made it so that no matter which platform a player is using, the game should run consistently across all systems, and none of the players will be left at a disadvantage, as was previously a problem noted in open beta.

In addition to the foundational changes of the game, there are also new attacks given to characters, and more characters, levels, cosmetics, and more will be introduced to the game both at launch and beyond. A new PvE mode is being added for launch to give another way to play when someone does not want to play competitively, and this mode will have unique rewards for completion.

Progress, Purchases & Content Earned In Open Beta Carries Over

Anything Earned After Servers Shut Down Will Not

According to MultiVersus, anyone who played MultiVersus in open beta will retain all content that was earned or purchased prior to June 25, 2023, including unused Gleamium and Battle Pass tokens. These in-game items will carry over for MultiVersus official launch on May 28, 2024. Any progress or content that was earned in offline modes after the Open Beta server closure on June 25, 2023, however, will not carry over.

When it first entered open beta, MultiVersus quickly gained many fans who enjoyed its tight controls and game mechanics and the humor and personality that was put into each character. The dedication that developers had to take the game offline and work on it for nearly a year after open beta shows an encouraging commitment to listening to player feedback and making the game as flawless as possible. There will likely be many more positive changes seen as MultiVersus launches its full 1.0 version release on May 28, 2024.
