While the new logo reveal for the DCU’s Superman is very exciting, its significance goes beyond the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn. It’s also a big deal for another future movie coming to the DCU. Assuming the DCU follows the comics, the logo reveal is just as important and exciting for the DCU’s Supergirl as well.

With production on 2025’s Superman having officially begun, DC Studios head and director James Gunn recently revealed a close-up of the iconic ‘S’ symbol that David Corenswet’s Superman is set to wear as part of his new costume. However, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is also in development with the lead role recently being cast. To that end, here’s why the new Superman logo is just important for the upcoming Supergirl movie, and perhaps even beyond in the rebooted DC Universe.

Superman’s New Logo Is Also Exciting For The DCU’s Supergirl

As seen in the original DC Comics as well as past iterations of the character on-screen, Kara Zor-El’s Supergirl has traditionally worn the same ‘S’ symbol as her cousin Kal-El. This is because the ‘S’ is actually the symbol of their family crest. Because they’re both surviving members of the Kryptonian House of El, the ‘S’ is as personal for them as it is an inspiring symbol to the public they protect.

Supergirl Comic Cover

Supergirl

Supergirl is a popular DC character that made her debut in May 1959 in the pages of Action Comics #252. Many characters have taken on the mantle of Supergirl over the years, but the most popular iteration of the character is Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. Supergirl has appeared in many comics, video games, movies, and TV shows over the years, most notably the 1984 Supergirl movie starring Helen Slater and The CW’s Supergirl show with Melissa Benoist.

While the newly revealed design for the ‘S’ was in celebration of Superman starting production and the character’s canonical birthday, it’s just as significant for the DCU’s Supergirl who will likely be wearing the very same symbol. While Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is still a few years off, it was recently announced that Milly Alcock will be playing Kara Zor-El’s Supergirl. As such, it is possible that Alcock’s Kara could end up having a cameo role in 2025’s Superman, perhaps meeting her cousin played by David Corenswet for the first time as a means of setting up her own movie.

Superman, Supergirl, and The House of El Sigil Explained

A Symbol Of Hope

Featured Image: Superman's chest, symbol front-and-center, with glowing bits of Kryptonite floating around him

As a Kryptonian family crest, the sigil of the House of El only looks like the human letter ‘S’. In truth, it’s a symbol of hope, a core truth of Kal and Kara’s family. To that end, this iteration of the symbol does look more like an alien symbol that is then misconstrued by humanity(rather than being an overt ‘S’ to begin with). This also means that the AI consciousness of Jor-El should be wearing the ‘S” as well, along with any other Superman-adjacent characters who might appear either in Superman, Supergirl, or future DCU projects.
