Austin Butler reveals why he chose for his portrayal of Feyd-Rautha to sound like Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron’s Harkonnen, offering insight into how he views his Dune: Part Two character’s upbringing. Denis Villeneuve’s second chapter to his 2020 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel sees Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides continue his fight across the spice-rich desert world of Arrakis. Making his debut in Dune: Part Two, Feyd-Rautha is heir to the Harkonnen family’s legacy, set to become the next ruler of Arakkis and become one of Paul’s most notable adversaries.

As Dune: Part Two hits theaters, Butler revealed how Feyd-Rautha’s past crafted his own performance. Upon realizing that Feyd-Rautha had grown up alongside the Baron and been shaped by him, Butler worked with dialect coach Tim Monich to imitate Skarsgård’s tone. Check out Butler’s explanation below:

Then it dawned on me that he would’ve grown up with the Baron, and the Baron being the one who has the most power and how we end up soaking in through osmosis those traits of people that we grow up with, but particularly those that we admire in some way.

I was working with Tim Monich, who’s sort of the godfather of dialect coaches and he helped me to really hone in on Stellan’s voice and what he does in the film. It is also just figuring out how his childhood shapes him into who he becomes. When you’re raised in brutality, you have a necessity for violence in order to be able to survive, so I think that ends up changing the way that his mind is.
